About the course

Welcome to the course “Understanding and recognizing discrimination“In our anti-racism counseling, we encounter people who have experienced exclusion, unequal treatment, and harm. They are seeking guidance, support, and a space where their experiences are taken seriously.”

To provide professional support, more than compassion is needed: Knowledge about discrimination, an understanding of societal power dynamics, and the ability to expose structural injustice are essential. This course provides you with the professional foundation to offer more confident, clear, and effective guidance.

What you can expect here:

Technical foundation: You will learn to classify discrimination accurately and to distinguish between individual, structural, and institutional levels.

A critical view of power: You sharpen your awareness of social norms, privileges, and mechanisms of exclusion.

Practical consulting tools: You will receive concrete strategies for professional conversations, case analyses, and empowering support.

Attitude & confidence in action: You strengthen your own positioning, ability to reflect, and confidence in everyday consulting work.

Processing time: The average processing time for this module is 3,5 hours, but this can vary between one and 15 hours depending on your learning pace. We recommend completing the module within two weeks to maintain the learning effect.

Module 0: Welcome and Orientation
It's great to have you here. Those who support people in anti-racism and community counseling need more than good intentions: they need professional knowledge, clarity, and a critical perspective on power dynamics. This course will help you understand discrimination more clearly, recognize it more precisely, and classify it more confidently.

MODULE 1: UNDERSTANDING DISCRIMINATION
Module 1 provides an introduction to the topic of discrimination. The focus is on why discrimination is often difficult to recognize and how it can be made visible when it is embedded in structures, routines, and norms. The module imparts fundamental knowledge for understanding discrimination. It explores what it means to understand discrimination as a systemic phenomenon, how deeply it is rooted in our society, and what role an individual's intention plays in defining discrimination.

Module 2: RECOGNIZING DISCRIMINATION
This second module introduces key tools that help to recognize and classify discrimination. These include both fundamental concepts and analytical models that make it possible to clearly name discrimination and racism. Without a common language and appropriate terminology, what happens every day often remains invisible.

MODULE 3: CLASSIFYING DISCRIMINATION
This final module focuses on classifying discrimination in (counseling) practice. Different levels of discrimination are presented and illustrated with practical examples.
