Counseling in the context of discrimination: Interviewing techniques, process and attitude

Date: 02.07.2026 at 9: 30 - 16:00 Cost: 330€

Providing counseling in the context of discrimination places particular demands on communication skills, role clarification, and handling complex issues. This workshop imparts fundamental competencies for structuring counseling processes in a sensitive and power-critical manner.

Participants learn to clearly structure counselling processes and to differentiate between concerns, emotions, and structural framework conditions. This fosters an understanding of counselling that takes into account the specific dynamics of discrimination, power relations, and institutional contexts.

The focus is on the key phases of a consultation process. These include the reason for a consultation, clarifying the issue, formulating a consultation agreement, and a realistic outlook on possible courses of action. Using practical examples and role-playing exercises, participants will learn how to structure complex issues, identify resources, and develop possible courses of action.

The workshop also provides an opportunity to reflect on one's own role as a consultant, attitude, and responsibility. Dealing with ambivalence, feelings of powerlessness, and institutional boundaries will also be addressed. The aim is to gain greater confidence in designing and limiting consulting processes in the context of discrimination.

Online expert exchange: Strengthening state anti-discrimination laws! Exchange, strategies, networking

Six years after Berlin's State Anti-Discrimination Act (LADG) came into force, Rhineland-Palatinate has become the next German state to pass a similar law: the "State Law for Equal Opportunities, Democracy and Diversity (LCDV)." A draft law is also currently under consideration in North Rhine-Westphalia and is going through the parliamentary process. In Baden-Württemberg, however, a long-standing political process – despite a broad civil society alliance – has failed for the time being. And in Lower Saxony, an alliance for an LADG was recently formed, also supported by anti-discrimination activists. So there's a lot happening…

Principles of the AGG

The General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) provides a central legal framework for protection against discrimination in the workplace. This workshop combines an introduction to the fundamentals of the AGG with a critical perspective on power dynamics in organizations. Participants will learn to understand the scope and limitations of the AGG in the workplace and to recognize discrimination both legally and from a critical perspective on power dynamics. The workshop will cover…
